The Farmer of the
Night Sky
The farmer comes out of his big blue barn,
And sows the seeds of stars.
He throws down the moon and dark clouds alike,
Closely spied by Jupiter and Mars.
His unseen seeds begin to grow,
Their roots cling to soil of silk.
Beelike comets jaggedly fly,
Leaving trails like jewelled milk.
Petals of stars finely flourish,
Sprouting rainbows of golden light.
Their fiery trail storms around,
And glittered comets fight.
Crackling! Sparking! Burn!
Flaring! Thundering! Fizzle!
Sky farm machinery clatters! Bucks!
Glowing flowers turn! Twizzle!
Cloud horse waves swell and break,
An opal sky sea has been made,
Windy ploughing shapes the heavens,
And the lay of the land has been laid.
Our nocturnal farmer begins to tire
The black velvet sky turns to blue.
His starry plants begin to fade.
The farmer’s day is now through.
