Sunday 5th October 2014

06 - Festival Church Service

10.00am - Free Church, Calne - Admission free

07 - Masterworks rediscovered

3.00pm - Marden House - £7; £5 Friends; £1 Children

Keith Abrams with Corinne Marsh (piano); Simon Parker (clarinet); Iona Hassan (violin); The Auriga String Quartet

What qualities turn a musical composition into that easy old cliché - a masterpiece?  How many layers of varnish need to be removed before we can be sure that what is underneath has masterwork status?  Can ‘masterpiece' characteristics shine through even a routine performance?

Keith Abrams will compare two works which have retained this status since their first performances as he seeks to clarify the cliché that is ‘Masterpiece’. However, the performances of Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat, Op. 44 and Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet in A, K581 will be anything but routine. The combination of artists promise to make this concert one of the highlights of the Festival, and a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon
